General Ratko Mladić, former commander of the Main Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska, collapsed and injured his head in the Hague detention hospital due to loss of consciousness, where he has been since April due to mobility issues, causing additional complications, his son Darko Mladić said today.
Last Monday, he went to the Netherlands to visit his father, but was informed that General Mladić had lost consciousness, fallen and injured himself, after which he ended up in a civilian hospital, where he visited him.
Darko said that during the visit, the general was conscious, but he does not know how he fell.
„He was kept there for two days and then returned. In general, the situation is unchanged in the sense that he is tied to the bed and is very sensitive,“ said Darko Mladić.
He cannot say that the general’s condition has worsened, but neither that it has improved.
The general’s condition is bad, he has been bedridden since April, when he was in the detention hospital and has not been able to care for himself since his kidneys stopped functioning.
„We are now in weak contact, but we still communicate,“ said Darko Mladić.
General Mladić was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal in June 2021. Due to his poor health, Mladić’s family and defense have repeatedly requested that he be allowed to receive treatment outside detention, but the Hague Tribunal, and then the successor of that court, the Mechanism, have rejected those requests.
